Exoplanets

Image
Exoplanets are the planets situated out of our solar system. Exoplanets are very interesting celestial bodies because they have similar characteristics to that of normal planets. They revolve around a parent star, have moons and could also have life on it. There are more than a trillion exoplanets, and many of them resemble Earth. All of these planets are very far away from us and therefore needed amazing inventions and a lot of technology before we could see them, though many scientists had predicted in the 20th century that there were planets outside our solar system. One launch which led us to a very interesting planetary system, was a telescope which was launched into the earth’s heliocentric orbit called Kepler space telescope. It was launched on 7th march 2009. It’s main purpose was to find celestial bodies which had earth-like characteristics.   What the Kepler telescope found was mind blowing. It found a planet called Kepler 62-e. Kepler 62-e is a planet also kn...

Dark Matter and Dark Energy

Image
One thing cosmology tells us is that the universe is getting bigger and bigger every second. We get to know about this through Edwin Hubble who made this observation in 1920. He saw another galaxy which was far and told everyone that the light from those galaxies was red shifted. That meant those galaxies were moving away from us. To explain this when there is an ambulance on the road you hear a high pitched sound and then as soon as it passes us the sound fades away. The same thing happens in light. In light if something is moving away from you the wavelength of the light will be longer, and red light has a long wavelength compared to other colours and blue has a shorter wavelength. He observed many other galaxies as well and noticed that the further away the galaxies the blogger the redshift. It’s like the galaxies were moving away from us at faster and faster speeds. Now we come back to the inflationary epoch where the first time the universe started expanding and ever since i...

Formation Of The Universe

Image
How did the universe start? How did millions of galaxies form? How did Nebula’s, stars, planets, black holes, everything we are talking about form? Honestly no one knows properly but what astronomers think happened 13.7 billion years ago the universe was hot and an enormous dense point which was a millimeter wide was what we called a supercharged black hole. The ball had so much matter in it that it could no longer hold and exploded violently known as the big bang. It was because of this explosion that energy, space, time, and matter were created. Radiation era accounts for the few thousands of years of the universe. This is a short time period that's why it is divided into smaller stages called EPOCHS . The first was the planc epic. Right now everything is small and it is close together, that’s why there is a lot of heat and there is no matter in the universe. There was only energy and superforce (Gravity, Strong nuclear, weak, electromagnetic) but in the end gravity split away ...

Black Holes

Image
Black hole is one thing which scares me the most, because well black colour depicts fear and also black hole is one thing which no one has ever discovered, but we do know about black holes. Black holes are formed after a star has gone supernova. They either become neutron stars or become black holes. Then they become a region in space with immense gravity and even the fastest known object (Light) can’t escape it. The boundary of a black hole is called the event horizon, a point of no return, and beyond which we can’t see at all. When something crosses the event horizon it collapses in the black holes singularities, and then space, time, gravity or any other law of physics doesn't apply.  So, now lets see how a black hole is formed. Stars are incredibly massive collections of mostly hydrogen atoms that collapse from enormous gas clouds under their own gravity. In their core nuclear fusion crushes hydrogen atoms into helium liberating a lot of energy and heat. Then that energy in the...

Nuclear Pasta

Image
Whenever we hear the word pasta our mouth starts watering, but we can’t eat this pasta because nuclear pasta is supposed to be the strongest material in our solar system, and according to scientists this is  maybe the strongest material. So, let’s talk about how this is formed.  So, when a massive star goes supernova or explodes, not all the material is ejected into space, some of the material collapses into a compact object called the neutron star. In a neutron star the protons and electrons are pushed into the neutrons and neutrinos, but that only happens to stars with the solar masses of 10 to 30. These stars are the most dense bodies in space, and they have twice the mass of our sun. Inside a neutron star protons and electrons compete with each other. Then because of this they form long cylindrical shapes known as nuclear pasta. Well, sadly this kind of material only exists in neutron stars and we can’t get it to earth as it will cause a massive nuclear explosion, b...

What Is The Shape Of Our Universe?

Image
Well, we all think that the universe is round but what if I tell you that you are wrong. Yes that the universe doesn't have a positive or a negative curvature or we could say that the universe is flat. Now for you to understand let me take an example. If there are 2 people living, both are 2 dimensional, but one person lives in a round universe while the other lives in a flat universe. Now when we look at it in 3 dimensional, we see a lot of difference but for them the light moves in a straight line that’s why they won't feel any difference. Now when they want to see whether they live in a flat universe or not they do a simple experiment. We all know that by adding all 3 angles of a triangle the answer is 180 degrees. So, if we draw 3 right angles we will get a broken square with 3 sides. This was true for the person living in a flat universe but not for the one living in a round universe, for her it formed a triangle. Now, he was thinking that probably his universe was not ...
